Originally designed by architects Cory & Cory as a joint venture of the Starrett real estate concern and the Lehigh Valley Railroad as a full-block freight terminal and warehouse, construction on the Starrett-Lehigh Building was completed in 1932. Since moving on from its historic roots in West Chelsea’s gritty past, the 19-story, 2.3 million-square-foot tower at 601 West 26th Street has become one of Manhattan’s most exciting commercial office locations, occupying the entire block between West 26th and 27th Streets and Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, and offering dazzling river views through 13-foot ceiling heights. But those roots are not forgotten: the Starrett-Lehigh Building was named a New York City Landmark on October 7, 1986 and is located within the West Chelsea Historic District.
Owned by RXR Realty – which purchased the Starrett-Lehigh Building in 2011 from San Francisco-based Shorenstein Properties – the tower’s elevators, HVAC system, electrical wiring, roof and lobby have all been upgraded to meet the needs of its modern-day tenants. The Starrett-Lehigh Building features large setbacks, alternating bands of steel-stripped windows with a brick exterior and concrete floor plates that are able to accommodate heavy floor loads. In 1931, the famous architecture critic Lewis Mumford said that “the contrast between the long, continuous red-brick bands and the green-framed windows, with sapphire reflections or depths, is as sound a use of color as one can see about the city.”
Ownership currently has plans to launch another $50 million renovation program aimed to further update the building’s lobby, common areas, restrooms, and building systems. Tenants enjoy bike storage and free shuttle access to Penn Station, Grand Central Terminal, and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Major tenants at the Starrett-Lehigh Building include advertising agency Mcgarrybowen, Club Monaco, Martha Stewart Omnimedia, and Tommy Hilfiger USA.
