837 Washington Street

Designed by acclaimed architects Morris Adjmi to acknowledge both past and present, 837 Washington Street is a planned 6-story, mixed-use tower in the Meatpacking District that intends to seek LEED Gold certification from USGBC.

Boasting 28,000 square feet of retail and 27,000 square feet of office space, the 6-story 837 Washington Street is set to rise just to the east of the High Line and the Standard Hotel in the trendy Meatpacking District. Developed jointly by Thor Equities and Taconic Investment Partners, 837 Washington Street will actually sit on top of an existing 2-story, Moderne-style warehouse that dates from the 1920s and was once part of the Gansevoort Market, which served as an unloading point for trains that brought goods and groceries down what is now the High Line from Manhattan’s far West Side.

For that reason, among others, the tower’s design echoes the Meatpacking District’s gritty industrial past: it features a metal and glass window wall set within an angular framework of gray steel beams that rotate around a brick core that ties it back to the warehouse below. Twisting as it rises, the dynamic of the tower is designed to echo the angles of the neighborhood streets until they bump up against the Manhattan grid above nearby 14th Street. Office floors will have views over the High Line straight out to the Hudson River and beyond, while planting beds along the edge of the floor slab will reduce stormwater runoff and benefit adjacent High Line landscaping.

After receiving Landmarks Preservation Commission approval in 2011 and DOB zoning approvals in 2012, construction on 837 Washington Street should be underway shortly.
